Worthington man arrested on arson charges

A Worthington man is facing an arson charge following a fire earlier this month at Sunshine Apartments.

Kevin W. Courtney, 62, has been charged with first-degree arson (dwelling), a felony, as well as fourth-degree arson (setting fire in multiple unit residential or public building) and obstructing a legal process (interfering with a peace officer), both gross misdemeanors.

According to the criminal complaint, Courtney told a Worthington Police Department officer at the scene of the May 18 fire that he "intentionally started the fire in his apartment with a cigarette lighter" because he "wanted to move out."

After Courtney was arrested, he also allegedly spoke multiple times about how he wanted to start the fire, and that he wished to be arrested and go to jail. He later reportedly said that he was going to "whack" the officer upon removal of his handcuffs. After being taken to the Nobles County Jail, he allegedly said he wanted to set fire to vehicles, a hospital and other apartment complexes.

Courtney is scheduled make his initial appearance in Nobles County District Court 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
